Dental Cleaning & Exams

Maintain a Beautiful Smile With Regular Cleanings and Exams
Robert I. Hlavac, Dental Corporation in Concord, CA

When you visit us for a dental cleaning and exam with Dr. Hlavac, we want you to feel completely comfortable and relaxed. That’s why we’ve created a system to welcome new patients to our office and to help you feel more at home from the moment you walk in our office door in Concord.

We Take the Stress Out of Visiting the Dentist

Before your first visit, you’ll fill out a few new patient forms to help us get to know you, your teeth, and your insurance information. This way we can more effectively serve you in a streamlined and convenient manner for each visit.

At your first appointment, to help you feel more comfortable, we will give you the full office tour, and we’ll discuss any particular issues or problems that you currently have with your dental or oral health. This will give us an idea of what you would like to see happen for your smile!

The Doctor Does the Cleaning

After that, we will take a full set of X-rays and any necessary pictures of your mouth, teeth, and gums. Then, Dr. Hlavac will perform your exam and do your cleaning, himself! We know that a lot of dentists don’t do this, as dental hygienists are capable of cleaning your teeth for you. However, Dr. Hlavac believes in being completely thorough with his examinations, and he doesn’t want to miss the chance to get to know your mouth and to catch any problems before they become major issues.

The exam also includes an oral cancer screening by visual assessment, and we’ll use DIAGNOdent laser cavity detection to find any existing tooth decay. Cleanings and exams are also complete with decay prevention and oral and dental hygiene education if needed. For example, we sometimes find that patients need dental sealants, fluoride treatments, or more information about eating well. We are happy to provide these services!

At Robert I Hlavac, Dental Corporation, we care about helping you gain and maintain a sparkling, beautiful smile. It all starts with a dental exam and cleaning by Dr. Hlavac. Let us help you enjoy the beauty of a healthy smile today! Call (925) 689-1772 to schedule an appointment or use our convenient online form.

Teeth Grinding

Get Relief From Chronic Jaw Pain and Headaches
Robert I. Hlavac, Dental Corporation in Concord, CA

Do you suffer from a chronic pain in your jaw near your ears at the joint? You may be suffering from what’s commonly called TMJ or TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder). The temporomandibular joint is more commonly referred to as simply the jaw joint. In cases of TMJ, patients report soreness in this joint in addition to other symptoms, such as clicking when chewing or talking, lockjaw, and teeth grinding.

Causes of TMJ

While we do not know exactly what causes TMJ, we do know that it can be brought on by or exacerbated by a number of conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Inflammation and arthritis
  • Strained tendons and ligaments
  • Disk problems
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Stress

We also know that genetics play a significant role in whether or not you’ll suffer from symptoms of TMJ, and we know that women tend to show symptoms more than men. With all of this information, we may not be able to pinpoint TMJ’s exact cause. We can, however, pinpoint the best treatments to ease pain and alleviate symptoms.

Treating TMJ

Once Dr. Hlavac has diagnosed your TMJ, he will suggest a course of treatment. For some patients, simply switching to softer foods and wearing a mouthguard at night to avoid grinding their teeth will be enough to relieve pain, relax the jaw, and prevent future problems.

If you have suffered from TMJ for some time or you have a tendency to grind your teeth, either at night or during the day, Dr. Hlavac will likely recommend further treatment to restore your teeth to good dental health. This can include bridgework, crowns, or orthodontics to correct your bite. He may also recommend cortisone injections to the jaw joint to reduce inflammation.

Surgery is rarely a necessary solution for TMJ, especially if we can catch it early and begin therapy as soon as possible. If you grind your teeth, or if you have other reasons to suspect that you have TMJ, please make an appointment with us today to get a diagnosis and start treatment. You can call us at (925) 689-1772, or fill out our online contact form, and we will be in touch with you as soon as possible.
