Gum Disease Treatment
Get Your Gums in Great Shape
Robert I. Hlavac, Dental Corporation in Concord, CA
If you want to keep your teeth strong and healthy for years to come, you’re going to need to keep your gums healthy and strong. Gum disease (also known as gingivitis or in more severe cases, periodontitis) affects the tissues that hold your teeth in place. Not only that, but when it sets in, bacterial infection in the gums can also spread to the bones supporting your teeth.
Unfortunately, gum disease can go undetected for a long time and can cause major damage to your dental and oral health before you know it. However, in the course of a routine exam, Dr. Hlavac can check for signs of gum disease that you would not otherwise have known about.
Because we care about your teeth and gums, we are always looking out for even the earliest signs of infection or deterioration so that we can recommend the best periodontal therapy possible to restore your gums to health.
Depending on the severity of the infection, there are a number of surgical and non-surgical forms of periodontal therapy to choose from, including:
- Scaling and Root Planing – We will ordinarily begin with these deep-cleaning methods to remove plaque and calculus (or tartar) from the surface of the teeth under the surface of the gums with the use of hand, sonic, and ultrasonic scalers.
- Gum Grafting – In this surgical procedure, we replace missing or damaged gum tissue with healthy gum tissue to ensure that the roots of your teeth are adequately covered, supported, and protected. The graft tissue will either be taken from another area of your mouth or with the use of lab-processed donor tissue.
- Periodontal Plastic Surgery – This procedure is designed to reshape the gums to improve their appearance.
- Diode Soft-Tissue Laser Gum Care – Using a diode soft-tissue laser, we will remove diseased gum tissue. As a laser procedure, this treatment involves less gum shrinkage, less downtime, and less discomfort or pain than traditional surgery.
