Protect Your Teeth On and Off the Field
Robert I. Hlavac, Dental Corporation in Concord, CA
If you’re an athlete, especially if you play a contact sport like football, rugby, or even soccer, you owe it to yourself to invest in an athletic mouthguard. Accidents happen. In a baseball game, you might not have your eye directly on the ball and it might hit you in the face, causing trauma to your teeth. If you’re a boxer, you could clench your teeth under a heavy blow and chip or break them. The list of sports injuries and accidents that can cause major damage to your teeth is almost endless, so what can you do?
If you want to protect your teeth when you’re on the field, on the track, or in the ring, an athletic mouthguard is the way to go. We particularly recommend coming into our office to have Dr. Hlavac take an impression for a custom guard made just for you. Custom athletic mouthguards are more comfortable and protect your mouth better than generic guards that you’ll find in athletic stores.
Stock mouthguards provide little in the way of comfort or protection. They are usually too big because they are made as “one size fits all” models, which don’t fit anyone properly. Plus, they have little in the way of cushioning for your teeth in the case of an impact, and they have no real retention, either. Even those that have some gel-like material to protect your teeth from impact can easily tear under pressure, which won’t do you much good.
You might be thinking, “But custom mouthguards are expensive…” Think about how much restorative dentistry can cost you if you need to have broken teeth fixed or if you need to get dental implants to replace a tooth that’s been knocked out and couldn’t be recovered. When you think of the protection you can get from a custom athletic mouthguard versus the cost, time, and pain of getting extensive dental work from damage done while you play or compete, you’ll see how inexpensive these mouthguards really are.
