Disguise Your Smile With Dental Veneers
- October 1, 2016
People will spend weeks or even months planning a costume they will wear for one night on Halloween. In that same time, dental veneers could change your smile for decades.
What are dental veneers? How can you get them? Where can you find them?
We’ll answer each of those questions and maybe a few more in this post, starting with the last question.
Veneers are part of the cosmetic dentistry offered by dentist Robert I. Hlavac, D.D.S.
By scheduling a consultation at our dentist office in Concord, CA, you can find out if veneers will give you the smile you really want.
What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are a kind of shell that is used to cover your teeth.
As a result, veneers can be made to look however you want. You can have the perfect smile you’ve seen in celebrity magazines and secretly dreamed of seeing in your mirror. (For what it’s worth, we are pretty sure some of those celebrity smiles are the product of cosmetic dentistry, too.)
We’ve heard dental veneers compared to a number of things — fake fingernails, siding on a house — but we think the best comparison is wood veneers.
Wood veneers are thin strips of wood that are bonded to the outside of a piece of furniture to give it the appearance that it is made of that wood instead of something else.
Each set of dental veneers that Dr. Hlavac gets for one of our patients is meant to give that individual the appearance of a completely different smile.
How Can You Get Dental Veneers?
The first step should be making an appointment to talk to Dr. Hlavac. During this visit, you can discuss what you would like to change about your smile, and he can determine if you are a good candidate for veneers or another type of cosmetic dentistry.
Dental veneers can be used to fix a number of issues, so there is a good chance that veneers may be a good option for you.
The next step would depend on whether you receive prep or no-prep veneers.
With prep veneers, we would need to prepare your teeth to receive the veneers. We do this by removing a thin layer of enamel from the front of your teeth.
Once that is complete, we would make an impression of your teeth. This impression is used to design a set of dental veneers that are custom-fitted for your smile.
With no-prep veneers, we may clean your teeth before making the impression, but we will not need to remove any enamel.
Typically, it takes a few weeks for your veneers to be finished. When they are ready, you’ll return to our office. We will clean your teeth, make sure the veneers fit like they should, and then bond them to your teeth.
You will live with a dramatically different smile and, if previous patients are any indication, with a big grin on your face.
How To Know If You Might Be A Good Candidate For Dental Veneers
Earlier we mentioned that dental veneers can be used to fix a number of issues. In truth, veneers are arguably the most versatile service we offer at Dr. Hlavac’s office.
Like teeth whitening, veneers can make your teeth look bright and white. Both of these treatments can help you deal with stains, but only veneers will work on other kinds of discolorations.
These other discolorations can occur as a result of injuries or as a side effect of medication. Your teeth can also take on a yellowish tint if your enamel wears away to make the layer of dentin more visible, too.
Like orthodontic treatments, veneers can make your teeth look straight and evenly spaced. If you have crooked or crowded teeth or teeth with gaps between them, orthodontics will physically move your teeth.
Dental veneers work by hiding your teeth behind a facade so people only see the smile you want them to see.
Like dental bonding, veneers can restore teeth that are chipped or worn down. Bonding is an effective and efficient way to repair one or two teeth at a time, but veneers can be used to restore several teeth at the same time.
And last but not least, Dr. Hlavac’s dental veneers can fix teeth that are stained, crooked, and chipped in one fell swoop.
